Palm Beach County has activated its Emergency Operations Center to Level III as extreme cold weather approaches South Florida, with temperatures forecast to drop into the low 20s in some areas.

County officials announced the opening of cold weather shelters beginning Saturday evening, with free bus transportation available across the county. Wind chills could fall into the teens near Lake Okeechobee, raising serious concerns about frostbite and hypothermia.

Residents were reminded that heaters may emit a temporary odor when first turned on, which is normal. Officials strongly warned against using generators indoors and urged those using fireplaces to ensure flues are open.

Emergency managers emphasized the danger to unprotected plants, pipes, and vulnerable individuals as the cold spell continues through Monday.
