The first public institution in the Miami metropolitan area, Florida Atlantic University (FAU), began operations in 1964 and only offered graduate- and upper-division-level coursework. FAU was created to serve the needs of returning World War II veterans. The school’s original campus was located on an abandoned U.S. Air Force base in Boca Raton, Florida.
Florida Atlantic University is home to the famous varsity team, Florida Atlantic Owls. The school’s athletics program is comprised of many different sports teams that compete at the highest level.
